Developing and producing customized injection systems for large engines is what we do best. Every solution represents a unique design response to individual customer requirements. One complete system – one solution. With all components perfectly matched: injection, electronics and turbocharging. Leading engine manufacturers worldwide have trusted in our expertise for decades. The results our customers worldwide capitalize on include reduced exhaust and noise emissions, lower fuel consumption, outstanding reliability and durability.
Medium Speed
Woodward is the market choice in providing high efficiency and low emission control in medium and large coastal and ocean going marine vessels, and power plants around the world today. Our control systems of fuel rack actuators, heavy fuel oil (HFO) fuel pumps, injectors, high-temp wastegate valves, and modular digital engine controls reliably drive medium speed diesel engines over 4000 BHP/3MW at speed range of 700 to 1200 rpm in marine and power generation applications. Medium speed industrial engine manufacturers’ and end customers globally rely on Woodward’s ability to design, manufacture and provide on-going support to meet their most challenging operating environments.
CUSTOMIZED INJECTION SYSTEM SOLUTIONS
Our goal is to set new standards – again and again – in terms of quality, durability, fuel consumption and emissions. Close collaboration with our customers is the cornerstone of a technological development process that we call “Injectioneering”. It allows development times to be shortened, later changes to be avoided, while optimizing the coordination of development and production. The result is a perfectly customized product that enables you to secure and expand your technological and business advantage.
COMMON-RAIL SOLUTIONS
Today’s high-quality large engines rely increasingly on common-rail fuel injection. Thanks to many years of experience and expertise in developing and manufacturing such injection systems, Woodward L’Orange has acquired an outstanding reputation. Common-rail solutions deliver the highest precision to guarantee the lowest emissions. With their robust design, the highest lifetime expectations can be reached. They can be customized to every application’s unique requirements. And finally, they are made for remanufacturing to save costs and protect the environment.
HIGH PRESSURE PUMPS
Pumps which are used for the injection of fuels into diesel engines rank among the technically most demanding members in the family of pressure generators. Our pumps are characterized by expertise developed over decades in terms of helices (in the case of conventional pump-line-nozzle systems), component coatings, sealing elements or valve engineering. The same design base is the take-off point for all common-rail pumps from high-speed to 2-stroke engines. Modular design allows the simple adaptation to specific customer applications. We deliver mechanical PLN pumps for all 4-stroke engine sizes and all fuel types: MDO, HFO, Bio-fuel, Orimulsion, among others.
HFO Fuel Pump and Injectors

Applications: Coastal and ocean going vessels, power plants
Dual Fuel Systems
Gas and dual-fuel operation ranks as one of the most innovative technologies available today for a more flexible, more efficient and lower-emission use of large engines (lower NOx / IMO tier 3). Dual-fuel systems are used in mobile application fields, such as LNG carriers, or in power plants with fluctuating gas supply. As required, the applications can be operated with gas for reduced emissions as well as with liquid fuel. This ensures a lower “carbon footprint” with less CO2 emissions and less greenhouse gas.
Large Engine Control Module (LECM)
The LECM provides a single-box, engine-mountable control unit built with Extensive I/O and Ethernet. This control scheme uses a modular approach for both the electronic control modules and the software. These modules (Main, Aux and EID) can be mixed and matched to address different applications need (Gas, Dual Fuel and Diesel). The flexibility of EID module allows the 20 output channel to be configured as injection or ignition driver for Gas, diesel Common Rail or micro-pilot injection, and ignition applications. The 24 channel analog inputs of the Aux module can be configured as a pressure, knock, or Thermocouple depending on the application need.
Fuel Rack Actuators
Woodward hydraulic-mechanical governors provide reliable and precise control of engine speed and output in virtually every type of engine application. Available in work output ratings from 10.8 inch-pounds up to 500 foot-pounds, Woodward governors are used in power generation, marine, pump, compression and vehicle applications. From simple, to pressure compensated, to microprocessor-controlled, our hydraulic-mechanical amplified governors control diesel, gas, or dual-fuel engine with enhanced capabilities including start fuel and boost limiting schemes, and transient fuel limiting (jump rate) improving engine load acceptance and reducing transient emissions significantly.
Wastegate Valve Actuator
Woodward’s Glo-Tech II hot valve systems are high-temperature butterfly valves mated with a high performance R-Series electric actuator used to regulate high-temperature gasses in turbocharged reciprocating engines. Optimal for use in applications in wastegates, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), compressor recirculation (bypass), waste heat recovery (WHR), and exhaust throttles. From 40mm to 150mm valve sizes and operating temperatures from 400 °C to 650 °C, customer have relied on Woodward’s decades of hot valve experience with high-torque, low-current, high resolution valve positioning.
ANTI-STICKING PUMP ELEMENTS
Our customers’ needs are in the foreground of every development we take on – and our new generation of anti-sticking pump elements is a perfect example. Deposits in the barrel often lead to the plunger sticking. This is most often the result of an incompatibility between the fuel and lubricating oil, i.e. low total base number values, and/or an incompatibility between different fuels. With the new anti-sticking solution, we have succeeded in reducing the formation of deposits – therefore reducing the risk of sticking. Key benefits include increased time before overhaul (TBO) and reduced engine downtime which result in a 4- to 10-fold increase in length of performance.
GENUINE SPARE PARTS
Injection systems in off-highway engines are almost always subject to extreme operating conditions. Variations in the quality of the fuels used, industrial outline conditions for the use of engines and their operation at extreme load points present major challenges for the development and production of our systems. In spite of these outline conditions, the lifetimes achieved with our systems are very high. The service life of our products is for example many times that of the system lifetimes attained in the automobile and commercial vehicle sector.
